Truck Safety Rules Do Not Always Mean Safe Drivers or Trucks
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)’s mission “is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.” Despite the FMCSA’s extensive regulations for crash prevention and safety, unfortunately, these rules, like the general rules of the road, are not always followed. Failures to follow the FMCSA’s regulations can lead to serious personal injuries and death. One category of such regulated vehicles is tractor-trailers.

Because of their much heavier weight, fully loaded tractor-trailers take much longer to stop after drivers apply their brakes. Their long stopping distance, combined with tens of thousands of additional pounds in weight, makes tractor-trailers far more deadly than single-unit commercial trucks or any smaller vehicle. Although not all “large trucks” are the size and weight of a freight-pulling tractor-trailer, many large trucks and commercial vehicles are regulated for a good reason.

However, despite regulations, vehicle violations and driver violations are revealed via inspections conducted and tracked. The FMCSA reports in its “Pocket Guide to Large Truck and Bus Statistics” that based on the 2,766,086 Driver Inspections Conducted by Federal and State Inspectors in 2021, 932,495 violations were recorded. Included in those figures were violations for: 

• Speeding State/Local Laws - Speeding 6-10 miles per hour over the speed limit. (63,950).
• Failure To Obey Traffic Control Device. (59,188).=
• Speeding 11-14 miles per hour over the speed limit. (30,280)
• Speeding 15 or more miles per hour over the speed limit. (21,356)
• Using a hand-held mobile telephone while operating a CMV. (17,861).

These are common violations that most drivers of passenger cars recognize, yet these violations (like some auto accidents between passenger cars) can have severe and tragic consequences.
